USGS gauge data is unavailable for Fall River today, so flow and water temperature cannot be reported. The river is fishing well — as a spring creek it runs clear and cold year-round, and current guide reports rate conditions Good heading into the heart of PMD and Hexagenia season.
Hatch Chart
Insect Size Activity Prime Time
Pale Morning Dun (PMD) #16–18 🔥 Excellent — peak emergence and heavy spinner fall 9 AM–1 PM; spent spinners drifting midday near Island Road Bridge headwaters
Hexagenia Mayfly #6–8 🟡 Building — first adults imminent; nymphs active in silty margins Dusk (7:30–9 PM); watch for big-fish surface boils at last light
Callibaetis #14–16 🟡 Active — building through June in slower spring-creek sections Late morning through early afternoon along weed-bed edges
Blue-Winged Olive (Baetis) #20–22 ✅ Active — reliable on overcast or breezy mornings 8–11 AM; late afternoon if clouds move in
Caddis #16–20 🟡 Sporadic — occasional evening flurries Evening, especially after warm afternoons
Midges (Chironomidae) #20–24 ✅ Consistent — all day, especially calm mornings in still sections Dawn through mid-morning; weed-bed sections
Best Time Window
  • 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM: Prime PMD emergence and spinner fall; dry fly and emerger fishing near Island Road Bridge headwaters
  • 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM: Mid-day lull — switch to nymphs and streamers along weed-bed edges and silty margins
  • 7:30 PM – Dark: Hexagenia dusk window building — position early along silty banks and listen for big-fish boils at last light
Guide's Tip
From the benchWith highs pushing 88–91°F this weekend, the PMD spinner fall will be your best dry-fly window — get on the water by 8 AM and work the headwaters above Island Road Bridge where spent spinners collect in the side seams. Mid-day heat will push fish deep, so switch to a nymph or streamer and target the shaded weed-bed edges. Most importantly, keep an eye on the western horizon each evening — the Hex hatch is right on the doorstep, and when those giant yellow mayflies start popping at dusk, position your boat early and let the big fish come to you.
