USGS gauge data unavailable for today's report; recent guide sources indicate flows near 560 CFS and declining from a late-May peak, with excellent water clarity and actively feeding trout. Sunny skies and a high of 73°F Sunday with light NNW winds set up ideal dry-fly conditions for the season's most anticipated opening week.
Hatch Chart
Insect Size Activity Prime Time
Pale Morning Dun (PMD) #18–20 Building — trickling now, expected to intensify through opener week 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Green Drake #10–12 Emerging — first sightings on lower river, caldera arrival imminent 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Caddis (various) #16–18 Heavy — dominant hatch transitioning to secondary role behind Drakes 4:00 PM – Dusk
Baetis / Blue-Winged Olive #20–22 Moderate — active on overcast windows and in shaded runs Overcast periods, 9:00 AM – Noon
Yellow Sally Stonefly #14–16 Sporadic — present system-wide, opportunistic rises Midday
Carpenter Ant (terrestrial) #16 Opportunistic — blown onto water during warm afternoons 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Best Time Window
  • 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM: Early PMD and Baetis activity in shaded runs; overcast skies from overnight NE winds may linger and extend the BWO window
  • 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM: Peak PMD emergence on the flats; first Green Drake sightings possible — prime dry-fly window with sunny 73°F conditions and light NNW winds
  • 4:00 PM – Dusk: Caddis evening hatch intensifies; terrestrial ant activity peaks in the warm afternoon before light fades — expect opportunistic surface feeding along grassy banks
Guide's Tip
From the benchTomorrow is the day — the Railroad Ranch opens at first light and the trout have had months of rest. Approach every pod of risers from downstream, stay low, and make your first cast count; these fish have seen pressure before and will spook on a sloppy presentation. Fish a long leader — 12 to 14 feet — with 5X or 6X tippet, and match the specific insect on the water rather than defaulting to a searching pattern. With PMDs, caddis, and potentially Green Drakes all on the menu by midday, carry a few of each and let the fish tell you what they want.
