Best Time Window
- 7 AM - 10 AM: Early BWO and midge activity on flat water; nymph the riffles before the sun hits.
- 10 AM - 2 PM: Prime PMD hatch window — transition from nymphs to emergers to dries as fish begin rising in earnest.
- 6 PM - Dark: Evening caddis and Brown Drake activity; work the tail-outs and slower runs with surface patterns for the best fish of the day.
Guide's Tip
From the benchWith flows at 161 cfs, the Smith is wading beautifully — focus your morning effort on the riffle-to-pool transitions where PMD nymphs concentrate before the hatch kicks off around 10 AM. Once dries start working, position yourself downstream of rising fish and present upstream with a reach cast to buy yourself a clean 4–6 foot drag-free drift. In the midday lull, switch to a single heavy nymph like the Frenchie and probe the deepest slots along canyon walls where browns stack in the shade. As evening approaches and caddis begin to flutter, move to the tail-outs of pools and work the Corn-fed Caddis with a downstream skitter — that's when the Smith's biggest fish get careless.
