On the water
Midsummer heat has trout pushed tight to cool-water creek mouths and springs; expect sunny skies with a high near 82°F today and light south winds, with isolated thunderstorms possible this evening.
From the ShopMadison Losee · July 30, 2026

Midsummer conditions are here until cool-off in September. Trout are seeking the coolest water, such as around springs and creek mouths. Try creek mouths that bring in cool water — Duck, Hope, Howard, Targhee — very early in the day.

Suspending speckled dun, damselfly nymph, and scud patterns under an indicator at these locations can be effective until the bright sky of midday. Boat fishing remains dangerous when winds pick up.

Hatch Chart
Insect Size Activity Prime Time
Speckled Dun #14–16 Moderate Early morning
Damselfly #12–14 Moderate Early morning through mid-morning
Scud #12–14 Steady Early morning; near creek mouths and springs
Chironomid / Midge #10–14 Moderate Early morning under indicator
Best Time Window
  • FIRST LIGHT TO MID-MORNING: Prime window — work Duck, Hope, Howard, and Targhee creek mouths with speckled dun, damselfly nymph, and scud patterns suspended under an indicator
  • MIDDAY TO AFTERNOON: Bite slows as skies brighten; today's forecast adds patchy smoke after 2 pm — consider calling it early or moving to shaded spring areas
  • EVENING: Isolated thunderstorms possible tonight (20% chance 7–11 pm) — clear the lake well before dark and watch for wind ahead of any storm cells
Guide's Tip
From the benchMadison specifically called out speckled dun patterns as one of the three key presentations — no direct speckled dun match exists in the current catalog, so pick up a local pattern at the shop or tie your own in #14–16. Set your indicator depth to match the water column at whichever creek mouth you're fishing, and be off the water or anchored safely before afternoon winds build — boat conditions can turn dangerous quickly on Henry's Lake.
