On the water
Midsummer conditions have trout pushed to depth, near springs, and inlet creeks to find cooler water. Sunny, warm days ahead with afternoon wind gusts to 18 mph — early mornings offer the best window on the water.
From the ShopBruce Staples · August 19, 2026
Midsummer conditions continue with trout residing in the coolest water. That means at depth, around springs, and inlet creeks. Early in the day offers the best fishing in these locations before bright mid-day sunlight reduces overhead cover and warms water closest to the surface.
A positive note is that fish caught and released this year average larger than those caught at the same time last year. Boat fishing remains dangerous when winds pick up.
What's Working — Hot Flies
Hatch Chart
| Insect | Size | Activity | Prime Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chironomid (Midge) | #16–20 | Moderate — subsurface near springs and inlets | Early morning |
| Damselfly Nymph | #12–14 | Moderate — migrating toward shallows | Morning |
| Leech | #10–14 | Consistent — active at depth throughout the day | All day, best early |
Best Time Window
- FIRST LIGHT TO MID-MORNING: Prime time — fish depth near springs and inlet creeks before sun angle increases and surface water warms
- EVENING: Secondary window as surface temperatures drop and overhead light fades, reducing fish wariness near the surface
Guide's Tip
From the benchGet on the water at first light — Madison's report is clear that early morning is the prime window before midday sun warms the surface and pushes fish even deeper. Target inlet creeks and known spring areas where cooler water concentrates trout. Wednesday and Thursday both forecast wind gusts up to 18 mph, so keep a close eye on conditions and get off the water before winds build — boat fishing on Henry's Lake becomes genuinely dangerous in wind.
