Mainstem Snake River

Increased flow for irrigation slows fly fishing somewhat in the river above American Falls Reservoir. Diversions cause changing flow levels throughout.  This will happen throughout the irrigation season and keep the best fly fishing through using wet patterns. Boating is the safest and most effective way to fish.  Wading remains dangerous. Streamer and woolly bugger patterns on sink tip or full sinking lines with stout leaders are best producers under these conditions. All boat launch ramps are open. Flow below American Falls Dam is about 10200 cfs, so wading there is dangerous.  This flow is ideal for boating and makes all launch sites easily used. Use woolly bugger, popper and craw dad patterns to attract resident smallmouth bass.
