Small Streams

A great fishing visit to many of our small streams is soon to be rare. Here’s why. High elevation waters such as Teton River in the Basin and Warm River in Island Park are now candidates for a killing frost. This will diminish terrestrial insects to near completion, and reduce both may fly and caddis activity down to lower amounts because of fewer daylight hours. The one exception to this is the Blackfoot River below its reservoir. Flow is being reduced because of storage being in order to capture water in the reservoir. Wading now is much safer with the low flow of clear water making streamer, wooly bugger and rubber leg patterns Very effective in deeper runs and holes.
