Small Streams

Western Green Drake activity is making Big Elk Creek a prime location for fly fishers. This insect hatches from every South Fork drainage streams but not with the intensity happening on Big Elk Creek. Just understand that this activity begins when water temperatures reach the low fifties ( Deg. F) and extends to early evening. Earlier in the day a bead head nymph pattern of choice is effective here, and as air warms, ant and hopper patterns work well. Kokanee are beginning their spawning run up Big Elk Creek.

Teton River is very warm in the lower section and canyon. Bitch Creek has the best fishing in the drainage if you add tranquility along with fishing. Early AM and evenings are best times to fish the river in the basin. Robinson Creek is down to base level with warm water in canyon reaches.

Warm River just below the springs is where caddis and PMDs prevail with terrestrial insects coming on. Water in the Blackfoot River remains extremely warm and low (40 cfs above the reservoir). Medicine Lodge Creek and Little Lost River have low water conditions.  Palisades Creek is fishing well, but is becoming crowded as anglers move in from streams with warm, low waters.  Low and clear Fall River offers evening caddis emergence.
