Small Streams
Big Elk Creek remains the star of the small stream show because of its western green drake activity. Palisades Creek is not terribly far behind offering good fishing. Consider that Bear Creek may be a great fishing choice with not many anglers trying it this season. That is because using the Jensen Creek Road makes for a near 100 mile trip from Idaho Falls and further for other big towns in the valley. With the exception of Palisades Creek, all small streams are flowing at base level or less. Terrestrial insect and caddis life cycle patterns bring top water action on all of these.
The lower Teton River and the river within the canyon also have temperatures high enough to stress salmonids because of catch and release actions. Teton River in the basin is warming and along with daytime recreational boating presence, make early AM and evening PM the best times to fish. Spinner falls occur at both times, Terrestrial insect patterns rule the roost.
Fall River is best fished in the evening when trout respond to caddis hatches. Some, such the Blackfoot River above the reservoir and the Little Lost River drainage are of low flow and warm and thus are difficult to recommended for fishing.
