South Fork

Flow out of Palisades Dam has been raised to around 11200 cfs, about 11500 cfs Heise, and 5100 cfs at Lorenzo.  Wading remains dangerous on the river because of the high flowing irrigation water. Boating is the safest and most effective way to fish.  Fish woolly bugger, San Juan worm, rubber leg, and streamer patterns deep throughout the river. Good dry fly conditions are present for fly fishers concentrating on slowest waters such as along vegetated banks, seams, and eddies. PMD numbers are increasing and the best time of day to encounter fish feeding on them is between mid-morning to midafternoon.  Green drakes are also active during this time period. Caddis activity is best during late afternoon hours. Big stoneflies are moving up the river where adult patterns presented to the above water locations are most effective.  Currently inflow to Palisades Reservoir (about two-thirds full) exceeds outflow.
