South Fork

Flow out of Palisades Dam is around 12400 cfs, about 12000 cfs Heise, and 5450 cfs at Lorenzo.  Flow this strong will place most trout to slower waters such as near banks and around seams.  Big stone flies are most numerous along the upper river. PMDs and yellow sallies are around riffles on most of the river. The best time of day to encounter fish feeding on them is between mid-morning to midafternoon.  Wading remains dangerous on the river because of the high flowing irrigation water. Boating is the safest and most effective way to fish.  Fish woolly bugger, San Juan worm, rubber leg, and streamer patterns and double nymph rigs deep throughout the river. Good dry fly conditions are present for fly fishers concentrating on slowest waters such as along vegetated banks, seams, and eddies.  Some green drakes are around. Caddis activity is best during late afternoon hours.  Currently inflow to Palisades Reservoir (about two-thirds full) exceeds outflow.
