South Fork

This is a great time to fish the South Fork. Fall colors are beginning, flows are  near 8500 cfs  (about 8700 cfs, at Heise, 4900 cfs at Lorenzo) making riffles more numerous,  wading safer, and fewer boats whether recreationists or anglers aboard. A few mutant stones are around in the morning. Hopper/dropper rigs are still producing fishing success. Flow out of Palisades Dam is unlikely to increase in a significant manner this season as the reservoir is at 16 % of capacity. We are all waiting for the fall mayfly emergence (BWOs, mahogany duns) to become significant. Keep caddis life cycle patterns in that fly box because they are a must for good top water fishing during evenings. Slower, deep waters and around overhead cover are the best locations to presenting streamer patterns.
