Irrigation reservoirs are fishing well at the bookends of the day, with life cycle patterns for speckled dun mayflies, damselflies, and scuds producing near submerged weed beds. Anglers should note that blue-green algae is spreading in Island Park Reservoir — use caution and check conditions before fishing there.

Early and late in the day remain the best times to fly fish irrigation reservoirs. Life cycle patterns for speckled dun mayflies, damselflies, and scud patterns will produce around submerged weed beds early in the day.

Blue-green algae are spreading in Island Park Reservoir.

Hatch Chart
Insect Size Activity Prime Time
Speckled Dun Mayfly #12–16 Moderate Early morning & evening
Damselfly #12–14 Moderate Early morning
Scud #12–16 Steady All day near weed beds
Best Time Window
  • EARLY MORNING (Sunrise–9 AM): Work life cycle patterns for speckled dun mayflies, damselflies, and scuds along submerged weed beds with a slow retrieve
  • EVENING (6 PM–Dark): Return to the weed edges as temperatures drop and surface activity picks back up — this is the day's second prime window
Guide's Tip
From the benchFocus your time on the first two hours after sunrise and the last two hours before dark — that's when reservoir fish are most active and surface activity from speckled duns and damselflies peaks. Use a slow hand-twist retrieve to keep life cycle patterns in the zone just above submerged weed beds. If you're planning a trip to Island Park Reservoir, check current blue-green algae advisories before you go, as conditions there are a concern right now.
