Yellowstone Park
As is usual, the Firehole River continues to offer the best top water fishing in the Park. White miller caddis, BWOs and PMDs provide the action which is best on cool, a bit unsettled days. Swing those olive or tan soft hackle patterns (sizes 14-16.) through runs and holes.
Carrying a floatation device, waders, and all needed gear to hike down the Delacy Creek trail between Old Faithful and Thumb Junction to Shoshone Lake is worth the effort. Juvenile lake trout, brook and brown trout are in the shallows around weed beds seeking such as leeches, scuds, snails, and other items within. Leech and streamer patterns presented close to these beds will bring non-stop action from trout ranging from 17” to 23”. It is only a three mile walk from the trailhead. This is by far the best still water action in the whole area. On leaving town early, this trip can be done in a day. Getting necessary permits at Old Faithful is more time consuming than the hike. Many shoreline campsites along Shoshone Lake have been reserved by incoming anglers.
