Yellowstone Park

The early season of the Firehole River is about over as the river warms up to the point that playing and releasing trout in the warming water can be fatal. Thus the park has closed fishing there after 2 PM each day to open at sunrise the following day. Fishing is picking up on the Gallatin River with caddis, PMDs and sallys giving some top water action.

Large brown trout in the Gibbon River meadow sections are responding during evenings to spinner, caddis and brown drake patterns.  Run-off is leaving Fall River Basin streams and the meadow reaches are drying out. PMDs and sallys are emerging and a few green drakes are on the water.  So some of the best top water fishing in the region has begun. Shoshone Lake is at its best right now if scud and leech patterns are presented around sunken weed beds, and as we said before, it offers the fastest top water fishing around until Beula Lake opens up. Its trail is open. Heart Lake Basin opened for fishing July 1st. Go to the Yellowstone Park web site to see the restrictions on going there.
