20 incher Stonefly

The 20 Incher stone has been in fly bins for a long long time, and there is a good reason for it... They flat out catch fish. Tied with materials that are readily available from most fly shops and perhaps from your own desk, this fly follows basic tying techniques, and really isn't hard to get to look like you have been tying them for years. In this video, we'll show you how to select the peacock fibers, create a proper taper, and add a nice touch to the thorax so the fly has a flat profile like a stonefly. We typically fish these in size 8-12 as a stonefly imitation, but they also work really well as a general attractor nymph or a heavy anchor fly on a euro nymphing rig. One of the best parts is that you can now tie this fly in a huge variety of colors due to the availability of dyed natural materials these days. For my basic 20 inchers, I choose to use turkey tails that my buddy Chad shot, squirrel that wild man Mason shot, and feathers from my aunt's now deceased pet peacock Fernando.
