Canadian Style Chironomid Bomber
Curtis - November, 2021

Fhironomids come in all sizes, colors and styles. Over the years, I've seen a lot of Canadian fly tyers tie these larger "bomber" style chironomid patterns, based on Brian Chan's OG fly pattern. The pattern, which is more of a style, is tied on the longer shank progressive bend style hooks like the ones listed below. While I don't find myself fishing size #10 hooks for chironomids much locally, there are some lakes and reservoirs, specifically Pyramid Lake in Nevada, where you usually need bigger flies to imitate the local fare. This style fly is made to sink quickly and by switching up colors, you can cover a lot of the hatch phases. Using resins for the wing buds and wing case is super slick and if you haven't used Anti Static Bag (ASB) material for body wraps, this a great one to start with. Plus, if tied in smaller sizes, this is a great all-around chironomid pattern for any body of water. Just try more or less rib material so you can vary the amounts of silver, red, black or orange showing through.
