Jig Streamer: Sculpin Style
Curtis Fry- April 2021
Mig streamer style flies have taken up a lot of space in my boxes the past couple of years. With the amount of Euro style nymphing we do, I'd say this Euro style jig streamer method has been getting a lot more play time overall. It's a deadly technique that just plain works to catch the fish. The technique shown in this video and Lance's first jig stream fly shown here, are a deadly combo. This style of fly and the technique to fish it, is carried over onto this pattern. With the amount of sculpins in rivers, it's a great option to have in your box. We usually fish this type of pattern with a Euro nymphing rig and jig the fly (as shown in the video referenced above) or you can fish them dead drifted or even stripped/retrieved. Mix up the methods depending on the water type.
I usually tie these with two contrasting light/dark color schemes: A darker olive option and a lighter tan option. I like the Firehole slotted beads with the muted natural toned colors but use whatever you have. Also, I list the materials for both color schemes below.
