White Rippin' Rooster
Brig - March 2026
When I’m hunting for big fish in stillwater, I’m looking for two things: movement and visibility. While the original Rippin’ Rooster was born from those stubborn days on Strawberry Reservoir, this new white variation was designed to provide a high-contrast trigger that fish simply can't ignore, even in off-colored water or low-light conditions. The soul of the fly remains the same—it's all about that erratic, "panic" motion that triggers a predatory strike. However, by swapping the traditional hackle for White Schlappen and running Polar Flash down the lateral line, you get a streamer that glows underwater.
WHY IT WORKS:
• The Contrast: The White Schlappen provides a massive footprint and pushes a lot of water, mimicking the broad side of a stunned baitfish.
• The Flash: Polar Flash adds a multi-dimensional shimmer. It doesn’t just sparkle; it creates a "breathing" effect as it moves through the water column.
• The Technique: Just like the original, the magic happens during the transition. When you see a follow, give it that slight pause to let the Schlappen flare, then a hard strip. That burst of white and flash mimicking a fleeing meal is usually more than any trout can handle.Whether you are swinging this through a deep run in Idaho or stripping it across a shelf in Utah, this variation is a must-have for the box. Give it a swim and let me know if those follows start turning into heavy takes!
